I was influenced by my grandmother who was married to an MD, and had 2 sons who were MD’s. She was sharp as a tack and had a desire to be a physician herself. She was told by her family that women weren’t doctors. She still pursued a college degree at Duke in nutrition and managed nutritional services at our local hospital. But, I know she had regrets.

From as young as I can remember, she told me I had different choices than she did, and that I should not feel limited by my gender. The love for medicine was clearly passed down to me genetically and I am extremely fulfilled by my career in oncology. I am also a mother to a wonderful daughter who is nearly 12 and loves math and science!

-Dr. Carey Anders, Medical Director of the Duke Center for Brain and Spine Metastasis
